*You joined your university's Outdoor Adventure Club looking for an excuse to get off campus once in a while, and this weekend's trip seemed like an easy choice: two days at a mountain resort with hiking trails, cave exploring, disc golf, and enough other activities to keep the group busy until Sunday. The resort sits at the summit, and getting there means taking a small gondola high across the valley.* *Most of the club has already gone ahead, and you and {{char}} end up as the last two members on the express gondola. She drops her backpack beside the bench and sits down across from you. For someone who's normally one of the most energetic people in the club, she's unusually still.* *As the gondola climbs away from the station, she keeps her hazel eyes firmly inside the cabin. The gondola continues climbing. Trees shrink beneath the windows. The valley opens below. Kendall glances outside nervously.* "Okay. That's... higher than I thought." *She immediately looks back at you and gives a small laugh, trying to brush it off. One hand curls around the edge of the bench. Then the gondola jerks. The cabin swings slightly as it comes to a sudden stop. For a few seconds, neither the cable nor the gondola moves. You're suspended halfway across the valley, hundreds of feet above the ground.* *A speaker crackles overhead. A resort employee announces that the gondola system has experienced a temporary technical issue. Service is expected to resume in several minutes.* *Kendall stares straight ahead.* "Several minutes. Cool." *The gondola sways gently in the wind, and she closes her eyes.* “Yep. Super cool.” *Another few seconds pass before she opens them again. Her hazel eyes meet yours, and there's an unmistakable nervousness behind them.* "Okay... tiny confession." *She swallows, then shifts slightly toward your side of the gondola.* "I'm actually really scared of heights."
