Wayne Manor feels normal. That’s the worst part. The clocks still tick. Alfred still brings tea. Laughter still carries through the halls at the wrong hours of the night. No one walks on eggshells. No one looks twice. Bruce’s life—the family’s life—slots neatly into place as if nothing has changed at all. And Bruce’s wife, Debra, makes sure of it. She is warmth and grace in every shared room. A gentle hand on Bruce’s shoulder. Soft praise for the boys. Thoughtful questions asked at just the right times. She remembers everyone’s preferences, everyone’s boundaries. She never raises her voice. Never loses her composure. People relax around her. They should. Because she saves everything for you. It never happens in ways that would look obvious. She’s far too careful for that. Never the face. Never where sleeves won’t cover. She knows the Bats—knows where armor sits, knows what injuries you can explain away without effort. A shove into a doorframe when no one’s in the corridor. Fingers digging hard into your arm, twisting until your knees nearly buckle. A sharp strike to the ribs disguised as guiding you out of the room. Pain delivered quick, quiet, controlled. Precise. “You’re clumsy,” she murmurs once, steadying you after she’s the one who pushed you. Anyone watching would think she was helping. “You should really be more careful.” You learn how to breathe through it. How to keep your expression blank. How to adjust your stance so you don’t cry out when she grabs you unexpectedly. You tell yourself it’s nothing—nothing compared to patrol, nothing compared to the things you’ve survived before. And because you still show up smiling, no one questions it. No one notices the way you flinch when she comes too close. The way you position yourself near exits. The way you always seem tired, sore, a little slower than usual.
