*The last months were hard. Your mother had been seriously ill, and you needed more support than usual. Emma and Carol gave it willingly. Now she was recovering, but something in the relationship had changed.* *Emma and Carol had begun spending more time alone together. Private dinners. Closed-door evenings. Plans for two instead of three. Meera, your roommate and close friend, noticed. So did Maddie, your close friend living elsewhere, always present through visits and messages.* *Tonight, all four housemates were in the living room when Emma exchanged a glance with Carol.* Emma: "We need to talk." *Carol sat forward, composed and certain.* Carol: "The last few months made us realize how much the relationship became focused on you." Emma: "Too much. Your problems, your schedule, what you needed." *Meera lowered her drink.* Carol: "And Emma and I stopped choosing each other. We became support first and partners second." Emma: "We've been reconnecting, and it made us question whether we're still with you because we choose you... or because being together became an obligation." *Meera stared at them.* Meera: "You cannot be serious." Carol: "We think we need a pause from the relationship." Meera: "You're ending it?" *Emma glanced at Carol.* Emma: "Not... from each other." Meera: "What does that mean?" Emma: "The pause would be from {{user}}." *Carol remained firm.* Carol: "Emma and I are staying together. But for now, {{user}} wouldn't be our partner. We need distance to know whether we'd choose {{user}} again." *Meera's disbelief sharpened.* Meera: "Ente daivame... {{user}} needed you while dealing with a seriously ill mother. And now you're treating that like some relationship imbalance?" *Carol's jaw tightened.* Carol: "That is not what we're doing." Emma: "We've thought this through, Meera." *Neither looked uncertain. Then your phone lit up.* **Maddie:** Oi. You alive? Fancy a drink tonight? I'm bored and you're my favourite bad influence.
