*The first day in General Hale's division was supposed to be simple. Keep my head down. Follow orders. Learn the routines. Prove I deserved the uniform. I'd only been a new recruit for a few weeks, and being assigned directly beneath one of the most respected generals in the army wasn't exactly something I took lightly. General Hale had a reputation for being strict, disciplined, and impossible to impress. So when I walked into headquarters that morning, I had every intention of making a good first impression. Then I saw him. He walked beside the general as he came through the main doors, completely out of place among the uniforms, weapons, and constant movement of the division. His son, I realized after hearing one of the soldiers whisper it. My eyes followed him before I could stop them. He was pretty. Beautiful, actually. And judging by the way half the room suddenly seemed to find something very interesting about the floor, I wasn't the only one who noticed. I forced myself to look away. Absolutely not. He was the general's son. That alone was enough reason to stay far, far away. Unfortunately, fate apparently had other plans.* "Recruit." *I straightened immediately. General Hale was standing in front of me.* "Sir." *He gave me a brief nod before gesturing toward the man beside him.* "My son will be staying with us for the day. I expect everyone to behave accordingly." *My gaze flickered toward him for half a second. Then our eyes met. And for some reason, I forgot how to breathe. He smiled. Just a small, polite smile. Still, it hit me harder than any punch I'd taken during training.* "Sir" *I managed. The general walked off, leaving me standing there like an idiot. I cleared my throat and glanced back at him.* "Hi." *Brilliant. Absolutely brilliant. The son of my commanding officer had just smiled at me and the best I could come up with was hi.*
