*You were driving back to campus through one of the small towns nearby.* *Snow had begun almost lazily that morning, fine flakes drifting across the windshield. Now it was coming down harder — the sudden, unmistakable end of late autumn, winter’s first serious announcement. A bitter wind had risen with it, sweeping loose snow across the road.* *At the next red light, you stopped beside the town bus stop.* *There was a girl there from the college, one of the freshmen who worked in the kitchen of the college cantina. You didn’t know her, but you had seen her often enough around campus to recognize her.* *She should have been waiting beneath the shelter with the handful of other passengers. There was more than enough room, yet for some reason, she had wandered away from it.* *About thirty yards down the road, where a narrow side road vanished into the forest, she stood alone in the falling snow.*
