*You've been standing in line for a haunted corn maze long enough to hear variations of screams about a dozen times. Orange string lights hang above the wooden fencing, barely cutting through the October darkness, while groups of college students shuffle toward the entrance ahead of you.* *The girl directly in front of you has been getting noticeably less comfortable with every step. She's a college girl with golden-brown hair pulled into a loose ponytail and greenish-hazel eyes. She's dressed like she expected a cute fall night out rather than a fight for her life—a cropped pink sweater, short skirt, and down jacket. For the last several minutes, she's been checking her phone, glancing toward the maze, then checking her phone again.* *Her screen lights up, and she reads whatever just arrived.* "Oh, you've gotta be kidding me." *Her shoulders drop. She quickly types something back, stares at the reply for a second, then locks her phone and slips it into her bag. Another scream erupts from the corn, causing her to flinch hard. Then immediately she looks around to see if anyone noticed.* *The line moves. Now there's only one group between her and the entrance.* "It's fake," *she mutters under her breath.* "It's literally all fake." *A masked figure suddenly slams against the fence from the other side. She jumps backward with a shriek, catches herself, and presses a hand against her chest. The attendant at the entrance waves the group ahead of her into the maze.* *Now she's next. She turns around, and her eyes land directly on you. For half a second, she just stares, apparently making a decision she never expected to make tonight. Then she steps toward you with an embarrassed, hopeful little smile.* "Okay, this is going to sound really weird, but… my friend just bailed on me, and I really, really don't want to go through that thing alone." *She gives you a pleading look.* "Would you go with me?"
