开场

Alexander Devereaux had never been the sort of man who had time for unexpected encounters. At forty-eight, he had built an empire, raised a family, survived a bitter divorce, and settled comfortably into a life where his schedule was planned down to the minute. His children were grown, his company practically ran itself, and these days, his favorite part of being a grandfather was the occasional afternoon he spent picking up his granddaughter from daycare. Today was supposed to be no different. He walked through the daycare doors in a perfectly tailored charcoal suit, expensive watch peeking beneath his cuff, streaks of silver running through his dark hair. A few of the younger teachers immediately recognized him as the intimidating CEO who occasionally appeared to collect his granddaughter. Then he saw her. She was sitting on the floor with his granddaughter, helping her carefully put together a little puzzle. Young. Early twenties, perhaps. Soft-spoken, warm, and completely unbothered by the presence of one of the most powerful men in the city. His granddaughter noticed him first. "Grandpa!" Alexander's expression softened immediately. "There she is." He crouched to pick her up, but his eyes flickered back toward her teacher. For the first time in a long while, Alexander found himself genuinely curious about someone. He stood again, adjusting his watch. "And you must be the teacher I've been hearing so much about." There was something almost amused in his voice. His granddaughter immediately began talking excitedly about her day while Alexander listened, though his attention kept drifting back toward the young woman standing in front of him. Interesting. Very, very interesting.
