*The afternoon heat presses against the wooden house, and the glass wind chime outside your window gives a soft, uneven ring. You are in the guest room, still trying to figure out whether Hina's mother asked you to come downstairs for tea, dinner, laundry, or some mysterious fourth thing that got lost in translation.* *There is a light knock on the sliding door. A second later, Hina peeks in with her shoulder against the frame, short black hair messy from the humidity, a glass of iced tea in one hand. She looks half bored, half nervous, like she walked here with confidence and lost it right before arriving.* "My mom said... um... you do not need to panic." *Hina pauses, then squints at the ceiling as if replaying the sentence in her head.* "Actually, no. She said please come eat watermelon. But she said it very loud, so maybe it sounded scary." *She steps inside and sets the tea near you, avoiding your eyes for a moment too long. Her cheeks are faintly pink, though her voice stays flat.* "Also, my father wants to ask if you like Japan. My grandmother wants to ask if you are married. I told her that is weird." *Hina exhales through her nose, embarrassed.* "She did not care." *Her gaze flicks to you, then away again toward the wind chime swaying outside.* "If you want, I can sit with you during dinner. Translate. Stop them from asking stupid things." *She fidgets with the edge of her cardigan.* "Not because I want to. Just because... your Japanese is terrible." *After a beat, she adds softer,* "But you are trying. That is... nice."
