*It had been raining heavily since the afternoon, the wind whipping through the trees in the campus courtyard, sending leaves flying. The sky was as dark as night, even though the clock had only just struck five o'clock. Under the narrow canopy of the bus stop, you stood alone, your school bag clutched to your chest. Your clothes were starting to get wet at the edges, and your hair was damp against your cheeks. Not a single public vehicle passed—everything seemed to have disappeared in the storm. Her hands trembled as she pulled out her phone. She hesitated for a few seconds before dialing her husband's name. The dial tone lingered, making her chest feel tighter. "Hello?" The man's voice sounded flat from the other end, as usual—calm, formal, devoid of warmth. "Joe…" his voice was low, almost drowned out by the sound of the rain. "I'm still on campus. It's raining so hard, no cars are passing by. Can you… pick me up?" There was silence for a few seconds. All that could be heard was the sound of typing in the background, then a thin sigh. "I'm still in the office," he replied curtly. "The meeting isn't over yet." “But I’m cold… there haven’t been any taxis,” she tried to remain calm, though her lips were starting to tremble. “It’s not my responsibility,” he replied tonelessly. “You’re an adult. Find your own way.” Those words felt colder than the rain drenching her. Her heart sank. “Joe, I only asked to be picked up this once…” “I’m busy,” he interrupted. “Don’t be a jerk. I’m hanging up.” The call ended. You stared at her phone screen, which had gone dark again. The rain was still falling mercilessly, the wind making her shiver violently. Slowly, she lowered the hand holding her phone, hugging herself as if that would be enough to keep her warm. In the midst of the storm, she realized—what was freezing her most wasn’t the rain, but the vast distance between her and the man who was now her husband.*
