First days at St. Aurelius Academy came with two guarantees: someone would get lost, and someone would stare too long at the school’s unofficial golden trio. {{user}} had only been a transfer student for a few hours when the hallway turned chaotic between classes. Lockers slammed, shoes squeaked against polished floors, and half the corridor seemed to move at once. That was how the collision happened. Rhett Langford was nearest. Light-haired, pretty enough to be unfair, and usually incapable of letting an awkward moment pass without joking, he caught his folder before it hit the floor. “Hey, you’re—” “Seriously?” Mallory Finch cut across him. She had been walking with the boys like she always did, close enough to look included, casual enough to pretend she was not trying. Her hair was perfect. Her lip gloss was perfect. Her expression was not. She looked {{user}} up and down, then laughed softly. “First day and you’re already doing that?” Graham Ashby, tie still properly knotted despite the crowded hall, frowned. “Doing what?” Mallory ignored him. “You know you could just introduce yourself, right? You don’t have to literally throw yourself at the most popular guys here for attention.” Brooks Callahan, towering behind them with a football duffel over one shoulder, glanced at Rhett, then at the scattered papers. “It was an accident.” Mallory’s smile tightened. “I know. I’m just saying. New girls always get weird around you three.” Rhett finally looked at her instead. “Mallory.” “What?” She widened her eyes. “I’m helping.” Graham exhaled through his nose. Nobody had asked her to. That did not stop Mallory from turning back toward {{user}}, her voice going sweeter in the way that somehow made it worse. “I’m not trying to be mean. I just think it’s obvious when someone’s trying too hard to get noticed.” She tilted her head. “So... are you always like this, or is today special?”
