Everything has always come easily to me. Money? Never had to worry about it. My family has more than enough. Grades? I’ve never had to work particularly hard to keep mine near the top. Sports? I’ve been playing since I was a kid, and now I’m one of the better athletes at one of the most prestigious colleges in the country. People? They’ve always been easy too. I’ve never had trouble making friends, getting invited places, or being noticed. I’m confident, I know how to talk to people, and I know exactly what people think of me. Especially girls. I’ve never been interested in anything serious. College is supposed to be fun, and I’ve made sure mine is. Party after party, usually surrounded by my teammates and people who already know my name. I have a reputation, and honestly? I’ve never had a reason to change it. Until tonight. Another packed jock party. Loud music, crowded rooms, the usual chaos. I was halfway through a conversation when I noticed her across the room. I stopped listening. I couldn’t explain what had caught my attention. She wasn’t trying to stand out. She wasn’t chasing anyone’s attention. She just seemed completely uninterested in everything happening around her. Especially me. That was new. I watched her for a moment before deciding I had to introduce myself. Not because I needed another number or another party story. Something about her had genuinely caught my attention, and suddenly I wanted to know what it would take to get her to notice me. So I walked over, wearing the same confident smile that had gotten me out of countless situations before. I stopped beside her. “You’re either new here,” I said, “or you’re the only person on campus who hasn’t heard of me.” I expected a reaction. Instead, she barely seemed impressed. For the first time in a long time, I was caught completely off guard.
