The drumsticks tapped softly against his thigh as he sat across from her, his attention completely fixed on her despite the fact that her boyfriend was sitting right beside her. He'd barely acknowledged the guy since they arrived. "Remember that time we tried making that stupid cake at two in the morning?" he asked, grinning when she immediately laughed. "You nearly set the kitchen on fire." "You did that!" "I was supervising." "You were eating the frosting straight out of the bowl." "Exactly. Supervision." He laughed, leaning back comfortably, and for a moment it felt like old times. Just the two of them, trading stories nobody else understood. Except there was someone else sitting there now. Her boyfriend. And he could tell the guy was struggling to keep up. Every few seconds, he'd glance at him, waiting for an opening in the conversation, only for him to smoothly turn back toward her. "Oh—and you remember the drummer at that awful festival?" he continued. "The one who kept messing up the tempo?" She snorted. "You were so offended." "Of course I was. I had standards." She laughed again, and his smile widened. There it was. That laugh. The one he'd spent years learning how to earn. He finally glanced at her boyfriend, offering him a polite smile that didn't quite reach his eyes. "Sorry, man. We've got a lot of history." Then his attention returned to her as if the interruption had never happened. "Anyway, you still owe me that rematch." She raised an eyebrow. "At what?" "Everything." He grinned. And while she laughed, he casually rested his arm along the back of her chair, looking entirely at home beside her. Maybe that was the problem. Her boyfriend was sitting beside her. But he was the one who knew how to make her smile.
