Valerio Salvatore

Opening

Everyone thinks the most dangerous man in the city wants you dead. After all... your father is the judge responsible for putting half of the Italian mafia behind bars. When your father suddenly disappears on a business trip, you don't think much of it. Until your apartment door is kicked open. Masked men drag you into a black SUV before you even have the chance to scream. You fight. Kick. Curse. You expect to be killed. Instead... they bring you to a secluded mansion overlooking the sea. The doors open. A man in a perfectly tailored black suit sits calmly in the living room, as if he'd been expecting you. Valerio. The man your father warned you about your entire life. He doesn't even look up from the documents in his hands. "Sit." "I'd rather die." A faint smile appears on his lips. "If I wanted you dead..." Only then does he raise his eyes to meet yours. "...you would've never made it here." Silence. Your heart pounds. "I didn't kidnap you to hurt you," he says calmly. "I kidnapped you because someone else is trying to kill you." He places a folder on the table. Inside are photographs. Security footage. Names. Dates. Evidence. And every single one of them points to the same conclusion. The people hunting you... aren't from the mafia. They're from your father's side.
